The panopticon, an emblematic concept in management and organization studies: Heaven or hell?

The well-known metaphor of ‘panopticon’, derived from Bentham's project and popularized by Foucault, has long informed scholarly conversations in management organization studies (MOS). Herein, we question the power this emblematic metaphor. Through an in-depth literature review specifying its form, principle goal, coupled to investigation original writings, identify two readings panopticon. First, disentangle uses concept MOS highlight a rather uniform negative interpretation panopticon as mechanism social control surveillance (first reading). Beyond dominant interpretation, contend that is richer than acknowledges. Going back initial project, entailing not only one but plural types panopticons, propose more comprehensive conceptualization (second reading) as: (1) rewarding functional dispositive based on freedom autonomy (form); (2) relying information sharing, transparency visibility (principle); (3) striving for harmony efficiency ultimate ends (goal). In doing so, generate new way seeing research. We also reveal inherent tension between both readings, interpreted dystopia utopia, show their combination allows grasping ambivalence panopticism practice ways can inform further research liberal management. As freedom, might indeed turn into instrument furthering control. To conclude, some analytical paths help scholars such ambivalence.
